Using the 百合病 idea for treatment of modern diseases

By mchern • Mar 15th, 2008 • Category: Heart/Mind, Lungs, jinkuiyaolue

Weak heart-yin:

Neurosis, hysteria, climacteric syndrome, dysfunction of the autonomous nervous system. And the like.

Apart from the two-herb-combi of 百合地黄汤, we can also consider others that are down-regulate an over-active mind: 酸枣仁汤 and 甘麦大枣汤, both of which reduce excess anxiety.

Herbs that can be added include: 夜交藤,生龙牡,磁石 (in more extreme cases) and 琥珀 (which I have not yet seen used clinically)

Weak lung-yin:

Lung-yin is more representative of fluids here, so we have dry and perhaps heaty lungs, with a dry cough being the most common symptom. Could consider using 益胃汤 and 沙参麦冬汤 as representative formulas. Both come from 吴鞠通’s 《温病条辨》and have 3 herbs in common i.e. 沙参,麦冬 and 玉竹.

Of course, in thinking about treating weak lungs, we must consider the representative 百合 formula for the lungs: 百合固金丸.
