大青龙汤

Think of this as a great extinguisher of heat in the body of the Ephedra-type person. The pores on the exterior are not opening up. And heat is being accumulated inside.
It’s a 麻黄汤 plus plus. Plus what?
Think: 大青龙汤 = 麻黄汤 + 石膏 + 姜枣
The Calcium Sulphate(石膏)is the key here. We have ephedra and cinnamon twig bombing the place and letting the heat out. Now, throw in the freeze and the temperature is going to fall much more quickly. Drastic measures for drastic situations. 姜、枣 will help the body withstand the fallout that’s happening in there.
When do you use it?
Let’s compare definitions:
- 麻黄汤:A floating and tight pulse, heat effusion, afraid of cold, body aches, no sweating
- 大青龙汤: All the above PLUS 烦躁
烦躁 is the feeling of stuckness, like you have alot of heat stuck inside of you and can’t get rid of it. It’s not just pain anymore. It’s one step up. That tells us we need to do something to blast the heat out.
Note too that this kind of feeling is unlikely to happen to a deficient person. He will not be able to hold the heat in, and will perspire before any of it can accumulate inside.
Last Note:
Remember that the amount of 麻黄 used here is twice that used in 麻黄汤.
