What really is Chest Bind？
What is it?
按之痛，寸脉浮，关脉沉，名曰结胸也。(line 128)
Chest bind is a terms I have taken from Nigel Wiseman as an English translation for Jiexiong (结胸). It appears in line 128 of Shanghanlun and is described thus: [the chest] is painful when pressed. Other than that, we have a accompanying pulse description – floating cun pulse, sunken bar pulse.
Why does it happen?
所以成结胸者，以下之太早故也。 (Line 131)
Line 131 tells us that treatment using precipitation (inducing diarrhea) is implemented too early. “Too early” is key here. It’s a case of inappropriate treatment (误下).
