Citrulline in fruits
By Karina • Aug 8th, 2008 • Category: CardiovascularAn article in the papers tells us that an ingredient in watermelon - citrulline - is converted to the amino acid arginine in our body. Arginine increases concentration of NO, which is a vasodilator. This substance is hence seen as something that will benefit our cardiovascular system.
Interestingly, citrulline is more concentrated in the rind than the flesh, and is higest in yellow-fleshed watermelons.
However, you need six cups of watermelon to get an effect. It is also a diuretic, which mean it’s a great fruit for hypertensive people.
Citrulline is also present in cucumbers and cantaloupe and milk protein casein. But it is most concentrated in walnut seedlings. Is that a reason why walnut is a 活血化瘀 herb?
