Belamcanda and Ephedra Decoction in Jin Kui Yao Lue

而上气,喉中水鸡声,射干麻黄汤主之。 (from Jin Kui Yao Lue)

IF there is coughing and upward movement of Qi, and sound coming out of the throat is akin to the croaking of frogs, then treat using Belamcanda and Ephedra Decoction (射干麻黄汤).

I think of Belamcanda and Ephedra Decoction (射干麻黄汤) as a variation on Minor Green-Blue Dragon Decoction. To make better sense of the larconic sentence in which it is presented, I ask in what way they are different.

  1. She Gan (Belamcanda) is clearly added. Since it is helpful for clearing heat in the throat, we can treat the pattern it treats as slightly hotter in the throat area than the Xiao Qing Long Decoction.
  2. Dried Ginger in Xiao Qing Long Decoction is replaced by Fresh Ginger here. So there is heat.
  3. Jujube (大枣) replaces Licorice (甘草).
  4. There is more of a coughing situation, since we see Kuan Dong Hua and Zi Wan.

Some books recommend using it when exterior signs are not so significant, but the phlegm is being generated profusely enough to cause that “croaking” sound (水鸡声).

If seen as a variant of Xiao Qing Long Decoction, It is also likely that the person’s body is deficient and tending toward cold.
