Diagnostics: Kidney Essence

What is Kidney Essence Deficiency (肾精亏虚)?

It is not easy distinguishing Kidney Yang, Kidney Yin and Kidney Essence deficiency. Below is an initial sketch:

1. Kidney Yang deficiency is first about cold (reduced warming ability); second about function (reduced pushing ability so heart can’t push, digestive tract can’t move, reproductive and urinary opening-closing function hampered).
2. Kidney Yin deficiency is first about aging (decreased substances like hormones and fluids ); second about possible deficient heat (either from reduce hormones or reduced fluid levels).
3. Kidney Essence deficiency is all about aging (mainly from insufficient hormones). It is also a more serious condition than Kidney Yin deficiency.

Pre-natal and Post-natal

It’s either a kid or an adult who has this condition.

For a kid, we see the following:

1. 生长发育迟缓
2. 身体矮小
3. 囟门迟闭
4. 智力低下
5. 骨骼痿软

Dwafism (侏儒症) and cretinism (呆小症) are similar enough to what we call Kidney Essence deficiency in children. Remember that cretinism = mental retardation + dwarfism.

For the adult we see the following:

1. 早衰
2. 腰膝酸软
3. 耳鸣耳聋
4. 发脱齿松
5. 健忘恍惚
6. 神情呆钝
7. 两足痿软
8. 动作迟缓
