Formula: Infectious Arthritis (Zhou Xueping)

This is an article written by a thinking doctor about the use of antibiotics for treating arthritis: http://www.roadback.org/index.cfm/fuseaction/community.display/display_id/235.html

There is always a possibilty that the arthritis is due to some prior infection, whether or not ASO titers are elevated. However, when ASO levels are elevated, it is more likely the diagnosis of arthritis due to strep infection.

Here, we use benzathine benzyl penicillin (苄星青霉素) aka bicillin (长效西林) intramuscular injection (肌肉注射) for an entire week.

On top of that, here’s an example of an accompanying chinese medicine prescription, with herbs that tend to coolness:

  • 秦艽12,路路通10,桑寄生25,怀牛膝15,丹参25
  • 忍冬藤25,土茯苓15,泽兰叶15,生炒苡仁20,豨莶草15
  • 川萆薢15,天仙藤12
  • 防风己10,鹿含草12,木瓜12
  • 苍术6,凌霄花15,红花15

This formula has a mixture of warm and cool herbs. Note that 秦艽 and 豨莶草 are cold, but 路路通 and 木瓜 are warm. 桑寄生 鹿含草 provide an additional tonic effect. While 鹿含草 is of warm nature (温性), 桑寄生 is similar with 石楠叶 in that both are of even nature (平性), not cool nor warm.
